Tempeh Teriyaki

Pecatu, South Kuta, Badung Regency, Bali

A great vegan option for chicken teriyaki. Some say this even taste better :-)

Ingredients

This Recipe Serves 2

Sauce:

1/4 onion

3 tbsp soy sauce

2 tbsp sesame oil

3 tbsp sweet soy sauce

1/2 tsp white pepper

a pinch of salt, or as you like

3 tbsp honey (change with sugar or maple syrup for vegan option)

50 ml water

Main:

1 - 2 package of fresh tempeh

3 cloves garlic

1 inch ginger

Topping :

1 scalion

1/2 tsp sesame seeds

Direction

Preparation for Tempeh:

Cut the tempeh into small bite sizes.

Bring a pot of water to boil. Add crushed garlic, crushed ginger, and the tempeh.

Let them cooked until the white part of the tempeh is almost disappear.

Strain and set aside.

Make the sauce:

Saute sliced onion until it starts to caramelized a bit.

Add the rest of the ingredients.

Add the crushed garlic and ginger from the previous step.

Strained the tempeh and put it in.

Let it simmer and mix it once in a while to make sure all the tempeh is covered in sauce.

You'll know it's done when the color of the tempeh is the same as the sauce.

Finishing touches :

Drizzle some sliced scalions and sesame seeds on top of the tempeh.

Serves

Serve it with rice.

Chef's Tip

The longer you cook it, the darker the color of the tempeh, the better it will taste. You can also put it in fridge and reheat it on the next day and it will taste even better!
